Evangelistic Temple School Summer Reading List
All sixth-grade students should read The Horse and His Boy by C.S. Lewis. This book can be purchased at various bookstores or checked out from the public library. Some copies are also available for checking out from ETS library. ETS summer hours are Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The following assignment is due the first day of school and will be given to your literature teacher.
Answer the following questions in complete sentences on a separate piece of paper. Attach your illustration to the answers.
Chapter 1-3
Name three instances when Shasta is looked down upon by Bree, Aravis, or other characters.
Chapter 4 - 6
What happens to Shasta when he goes into the city?
Chapter 7 - 9
There is a difference in the way Aravis and Lasaraleen look at material goods. Describe this difference.
Chapter 10 - 12
In chapter 10, Shasta proves he is one of the bravest members of his group. How does he do this?
In chapter ll, Shasta meets Aslan, who begins to teach Shasta that he was never alone - even in the hardest times of his life. Give two examples.
Chapter 13 - 15
Character Analysis: Shasta undergoes a change in character and identity. How do various factors or characters cause or help him to change?
Biblical Application: Read and copy the scripture James 4:6. One of the major themes in the book is the foolishness of pride and the wisdom of being humble. How did the story show a prideful character being brought down and a humble character being lifted up?
Theme: Another major theme in the story is having courage in the face of danger, or when others may look down on you. Using a plain white sheet of paper, illustrate a scene from the story that is a good example of the theme of courage.
